Trip Down Market Street, 1906

This video is an incredible portrait of Market Street in the era shortly before the 1906 earthquake. Multiple cable cars ran up and down Market Street at the time. The video was taken at the front of one of these cable cars heading east towards the Ferry Building. Street cars can seen crossing Market Street at Stockton Street to and from 4th Street. These early precursors to the Central Subway were part of a vast network of cable cars and street cars that connected all points of the City.  (Film is courtesy of the Prelanger Archives, Creative Commons License)
